The Last Leaf is an ongoing documentary project that explores the emotional and cultural journey of a disappearing indigenous language, told through the lives of its final speakers. Executive produced by Adnan Soykot under the banner of Khirki Films, the film is directed by Shajnin Rahman, the first female director to join the Khirki Films creative team.
Set in a remote tea garden of Sreemangal, the film follows Pius Nanuar, a spirited youth from the Kharia community who is not only a social worker but also a devoted language activist. As the Kharia language stands on the verge of extinction, The Last Leaf captures his efforts to preserve what remains. It uncovers personal stories of loss, resilience, and cultural memory, offering a cinematic reflection on identity, tradition, and the invisible threads that connect generations through language.
The project was selected for the prestigious Exposition of Young Film Talents (EYFT), a development grant and workshop initiative by the Liberation War Museum, and received the Research & Development Grant at the 12th Dhaka DocFest (2024).
Adnan Soykot’s role as Executive Producer reflects Khirki Films’ commitment to socially engaged storytelling and cultural preservation. The film is being developed with support from the Kharia community of Barmachara, alongside the core Khirki team.
